Global geopolitical tensions and rising crude oil prices may impact market momentum.
Indian stock indices are poised for a strong opening on Tuesday, with GIFT Nifty showing a notable increase of 116 points, reaching 23,519. This positive trend comes despite a backdrop of weakness in Asian markets and losses in US technology stocks overnight. The recent rally in Indian equities, particularly supported by major players like Reliance Industries, has bolstered domestic investor sentiment.
In the previous trading session, the Sensex experienced a remarkable surge of 1,233.25 points, or 1.66%, closing at 75,692.78, while the Nifty climbed 387.70 points, or 1.68%, to finish at 23,440.80. The substantial rise was largely attributed to Reliance Industries, which saw its shares jump approximately 12% following strong fiscal second-quarter results. Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors continued to show confidence, purchasing equities worth Rs 3,114 crore for the second consecutive session, although domestic institutions sold shares amounting to Rs 392 crore.
Asian markets, however, faced declines on Tuesday, primarily due to ongoing selling pressure in US semiconductor stocks, which negatively affected technology shares. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index dropped by 0.6%, and South Korea's Kospi fell by over 2%. Japan's markets were closed for a holiday, but futures indicated a slight downturn. The Nasdaq 100 has entered correction territory, having fallen 10% from its peak, raising concerns about the sustainability of the recent AI investment boom.
Crude oil prices also saw an uptick in early Asian trading, driven by reports of US military actions in Iran, which heightened fears of escalating tensions in the region. Brent crude futures rose by 48 cents to $105.25 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate increased by 47 cents to $96.93 per barrel. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that global signals remain mixed, indicating that geopolitical developments and energy price fluctuations will likely influence the short-term trajectory of Indian markets.
Looking ahead, the potential for sustained de-escalation in the Middle East and a moderation in crude oil prices could further support the recovery of domestic markets. However, any breakdown in diplomatic negotiations or continued weakness in global technology stocks could reignite volatility and affect investor sentiment, impacting capital flows into Indian equities.
