FSSAI Proposes Warning Labels for Unhealthy Packaged Foods
In response to a Supreme Court directive, FSSAI suggests new warning labels for foods high in sugar, salt, and fat.
FSSAI proposes red hexagonal warning labels.
Labels aim to inform consumers about unhealthy ingredients.
Implementation will occur in two phases.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has put forth a proposal for red hexagonal warning labels on packaged foods that are high in sugar, saturated fat, and salt. This initiative follows a Supreme Court directive urging clearer labeling to help consumers make informed choices. The proposed labels will feature pictorial warnings such as 'High Fat', 'High Sugar', and 'High Salt', making it easier for consumers to identify unhealthy products at a glance.
The implementation of this labeling system will occur in two phases. Phase I will focus on products high in two or more specified nutrients, while Phase II will extend the requirement to those high in any one of the specified nutrients. Notably, single-ingredient foods like ghee and sugar will be exempt from these requirements. The FSSAI aims to enhance consumer awareness, particularly among children and vulnerable populations, ensuring they can make healthier food choices.
