The Indian government is working on finalizing satellite communication regulations.

In a recent statement, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, emphasized that the introduction of Starlink in India would significantly enhance consumer options. Speaking on Sunday, Musk dismissed concerns raised by supporters of Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, regarding Starlink's competitive viability. He characterized these arguments as 'absurd hypocrisy and hyperbole,' asserting that competition would ultimately favor Indian citizens by providing them with more choices.

Musk pointed out the contradictory nature of claims made by Ambani's supporters, who argue that Starlink cannot compete with the low prices offered by Reliance while simultaneously suggesting that Starlink would pose a formidable challenge. He stated, 'The reality is that competition would greatly benefit the average citizen in India by giving them more choices.' Musk acknowledged that while Ambani's profits may decline, he would not face business failure.

The discussion comes amid delays in Starlink's commercial launch in India. Musk has previously criticized Ambani, referring to him as 'Prime Minister Ambani' and suggesting that he is the 'real boss of India.' He has alleged that certain business groups are attempting to hinder Starlink's entry to maintain their market dominance. The Indian government, however, has rejected these claims, stating that the delays are due to pending regulatory and security requirements.

At the India Mobile Congress 2026 held in New Delhi, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia reiterated the government's stance against monopolies in any sector. He confirmed that three satellite communication operators, including Reliance Jio Satcom, Bharti Airtel-backed Eutelsat OneWeb, and Starlink, have received licenses. However, the government noted that security clearances for these operators are still pending, and the satellite spectrum pricing framework is being finalized.

Looking ahead, the Indian government is expected to expedite the regulatory process to facilitate the launch of satellite communication services. Once the necessary requirements are met, commercial operations can commence, allowing consumers to benefit from increased competition in the satellite internet sector.
