Electronics Prices Set to Rise by Up to 8% from October 1
Consumers eyeing new air-conditioners, TVs, and fridges this Diwali will face price hikes starting October 1, impacting festive budgets.
Air-conditioner prices may increase by 5-8%, while TVs and fridges could see a rise of 3-4%.
Manufacturers cite higher costs for materials and supply chain disruptions as reasons for the price hikes.
Consumers may still find deals on older stock before the price increases take full effect.
As the festive shopping season approaches, consumers planning to purchase new air-conditioners, televisions, or refrigerators should prepare for increased costs starting October 1. Reports indicate that air-conditioners could see price hikes of 5-8%, while televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines may rise by approximately 3-4%. This news comes at a challenging time for families looking to upgrade their appliances ahead of Diwali.
The impending price adjustments are part of a broader trend in the consumer electronics sector, which is entering its busiest sales period of the year. Manufacturers are grappling with rising costs for essential materials such as copper, aluminum, and steel, as well as crude oil derivatives and freight charges. These factors, compounded by currency fluctuations and supply chain disruptions, are forcing companies to pass on some of these costs to consumers.
According to industry experts, the price increases are driven by the rising costs of raw materials. Copper and aluminum are vital for manufacturing air-conditioners and other appliances, while steel is used across various product categories. Additionally, the ongoing geopolitical tensions have disrupted shipping routes, leading to delays and increased freight costs. Vijay Sharma, Managing Director of Optoma Technology (India), highlighted that the supply chain remains under pressure, particularly for critical components like semiconductors.
Air-conditioners are expected to bear the brunt of these price hikes, with some brands already implementing increases. For instance, Blue Star has raised its AC prices by 8%, which translates to an additional cost of Rs 4,000 for a Rs 50,000 unit. Other appliances, including LED TVs and refrigerators, are also likely to see price increases of 3-4%. Thomson India plans a 10% price hike across its product range after October, while Intex is currently assessing the situation before making any decisions.
Despite the looming price hikes, consumers may still find opportunities for savings. Retailers have stocked some inventory at previous prices, allowing for potential discounts on older stock even after the price adjustments take effect. Additionally, brands are expected to introduce financing options and promotional offers to attract buyers during the festive season. As a result, consumers are advised to compare final prices, availability of older stock, and financing options when shopping this Diwali.
