Axis Bank has reported a notable increase in its net profit for the second quarter of the fiscal year, reaching ₹7,003 crore, marking a 37.6% rise compared to the same period last year. This figure, however, fell short of Bloomberg's estimate of ₹7,180 crore. The results were announced for the quarter ending on September 30, 2023, highlighting the bank's financial performance amidst a competitive landscape.
The bank's net interest income (NII) also saw an upward trend, climbing 11.8% year-on-year to ₹15,371 crore, exceeding the anticipated ₹15,259 crore. In the previous year’s quarter, the NII stood at ₹13,744.55 crore. Additionally, Axis Bank improved its gross and net non-performing asset (NPA) ratios, which are now at 1.16% and 0.35%, respectively, indicating a healthier asset quality.
In terms of provisions, Axis Bank reported a significant reduction, with provisions amounting to ₹1,694 crore, down from ₹3,547 crore a year ago. This decline was also below the market expectation of ₹2,236.85 crore. The bank's advances grew by 22.7% year-on-year, while deposits increased by 20.7%, showcasing robust growth in lending and savings.
The implications of these results are significant for the banking sector in India, as they reflect Axis Bank's strategic focus on digital innovation and customer engagement. The bank has expanded its digital payment offerings and has become the first Indian bank to provide Apple Pay to its credit card customers. This move is expected to enhance customer experience and strengthen its market position.
Looking ahead, Axis Bank aims to continue its growth trajectory by investing in technology and enhancing its service offerings. The management has emphasized the importance of innovation and strategic partnerships to meet evolving customer expectations. Future quarters will likely reveal how these initiatives impact the bank's performance and its ability to adapt to the changing financial landscape.
