Bharti Airtel has unveiled three new prepaid plans that exclusively offer voice calls and SMS, marking a significant shift in the telecom landscape. This initiative aligns with the recent guidelines set forth by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), making Airtel the first operator to introduce such offerings. The plans are available for Rs 185, Rs 203, and Rs 206, and can be accessed through Airtel's app and website.

The Rs 185 plan, which is the most affordable option, provides a validity of 28 days, while the Rs 203 plan extends for 30 days, offering two extra days for an additional cost of Rs 18. The Rs 206 plan is valid for one calendar month, renewing on the same date each month. Notably, all three plans come with unlimited local, STD, and roaming calls, along with 300 SMS, but do not include any mobile data. Additionally, users can enjoy free HelloTunes, allowing them to change their tune every 30 days at no extra charge.

These new offerings are particularly targeted at customers who primarily require calling and messaging services, such as feature phone users and individuals maintaining secondary connections for calls. This demographic often relies on Wi-Fi for internet access, making bundled mobile data less appealing. The introduction of shorter-validity plans also allows customers to make smaller recharge commitments, enhancing flexibility within Airtel's prepaid portfolio.

The launch of these voice-only plans follows TRAI's recent directive to telecom operators to broaden their offerings of voice-and-SMS-only options while simultaneously reducing tariffs. In September, the regulator mandated that operators provide special tariff vouchers for voice calls and SMS at lower costs, without the inclusion of bundled data services. This move aims to cater to a segment of consumers who prioritize voice communication over data usage.

Looking ahead, Airtel's new plans are expected to reshape the prepaid market by providing more tailored options for customers focused on voice and SMS. As the telecom landscape evolves, it will be interesting to see how competitors respond to this initiative and whether they will introduce similar offerings in compliance with TRAI's regulations.
