Investor sentiment is shifting as competition in the AI sector intensifies.

On October 13, shares of companies involved in artificial intelligence saw a notable decline, with losses reaching up to 4.5%. This downturn was largely influenced by a significant selloff in chipmakers, which has prompted investors to reassess their positions in the AI sector amid increasing competition. The MSCI Asia-Pacific index, excluding Japan, fell more than 2%, marking its lowest point since late July, with AI chip manufacturers at the forefront of these losses.

The decline in AI-related stocks was exacerbated by a sharp drop in U.S. chipmakers following reports of advancements by Chinese competitor ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). This development raised concerns that Chinese firms might soon close the technological gap with their U.S. counterparts. Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo, noted that the news regarding CXMT was a significant catalyst for the selloff, indicating that investors are becoming less tolerant of the current AI market dynamics.

At 1:05 PM IST, E2E Networks shares were down 3.5% to Rs 710, while Black Box and Orient Technologies saw declines of 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively. Anant Raj, often viewed as a proxy for AI investments, also experienced a 2% drop. The energy sector was not spared either, with Hitachi Energy India and other companies in the Nifty 200 index facing declines of 3% to 5% amid fluctuating crude oil prices, which are influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The energy market is currently grappling with uncertainty as Brent crude futures hover around $105.9 per barrel, close to a two-week high. Investor concerns about demand visibility in the energy sector have compounded the challenges faced by energy stocks. South Korea's KOSPI, a significant player in the global AI landscape, plummeted over 6%, marking its steepest single-day drop since July, while Japan's Nikkei and Taiwan's stock market also faced declines of 2.6% and 2%, respectively.

Looking ahead, the market's appetite for AI investments will be tested by Tencent Holdings' upcoming bond sale, which aims to raise at least $4.5 billion through dollar and offshore yuan bonds. This event could provide insights into investor confidence in the AI sector amid the prevailing market uncertainties.
